PRESIDENT RAMOS-HORTA OPENS FESTIVAL OF TREES, FOOD AND ARTS TO CELEBRATE WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Dili, November 14, 2024 (Média Democracia) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta opened the Festival of Plants, Food and Arts with the theme, “Go Green, Buy Local” – a three-day celebration of Timor-Leste women’s empowerment and environmental sustainability held at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace from 14-16 November 2024.

The festival organized by the Women’s Economic Empowerment Unit, features local female traders showcasing traditional crafts, plants and food products.

“The aim of the festival is to increase the visibility of female employees. Create opportunities for engagement between vendors and clients. Help women build their business footprint. Recognize and celebrate the success of Timorese women. Promote environmental sustainability and awareness about recycling.” President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta said.

The event began with a tasting experience of Timor Street Food Group’s signature dishes, which served Timorese specialties to invited guests, including government representatives, development partners, and diplomatic persnnel.

Highlights of the three-day festival include: Food and art exhibitions showcasing the empowerment of local women. Competitions for the best creative exhibition and tent presentation. Cultural interspersal opportunities with participating embassies. Interactive activities including a raffle for prose and a lucky draw. A showcase of sustainable business practices. Local food and snack vendors.

“The strength of our country is that we have the innovation and determination of our women workers and their commitment to sustainable business practices. This festival presents a unique opportunity to showcase the incredible talents of our women for local businesses, while promoting environmental awareness. By bringing together the creative power of our people with environmental advocacy, we are building a more sustainable and equitable future for Timor-Leste.” He added.

This initiative is in line with the President’s compromise to support women’s economic empowerment while promoting environmental sustainability and cultural preservation.
