According to the Executive Director of the Hadomi Timor Foundation, Abarão Monteiro, this is a way to talk to leaders to realize the importance of cybercrime and data protection laws because in other countries people have talked about more advanced laws, laws that can regulate activities in the field of Arhficial Intelligence (AI) and Timor-Leste (TL) is still adding cybercrime and data protection laws.

“The law on cybercrime and data protection should automatically exist, but Timor-Leste has not paid attention to this law, our leaders have not paid attention to the cybercrime law even though they also know that in TL there is a lot of violence due to the use of technology, there are also victims in the use of technology, but our leaders have not thought about this law.” Said the Executive Director

He continued, in this discussion, attention can be given to the law on cybercrime and data protection so that the government can accelerate the ratification of this law by the Ministry of the Council and bring it to the Parliament so that the cybercrime law can be implemented immediately and in the next two years can be adjusted to this law.

“A few months ago we met with the Police and Criminal Investigation (PSIK) and Law Enforcement and Human Rights (PDHJ) regarding the many cases they received related to technology and digital issues. In our observation, many people have become victims and many employees have expressed their concerns to us,” he said.

He added that based on his observations, threats have started to emerge, so the government must create a law on cybercrime and data protection, so that it can resolve problems that occur online.

“In this discussion we want to get information from our society, to what extent they feel and see, their ideas are gathered together to ensure that cybercrime is indeed important and storing data can also advocate to our higher levels especially in the Ministry of Law, Information and Communication Technology (TIC) and related institutions for the development of technology so that cybercrime laws can be quickly enforced.” He added.

As the Head of the National Communications Infrastructure Development Department, Paulo da Costa said that the Cybercrime Law is very important because this law can regulate online activities, because look, nowadays we are advanced and in the world of technology.

“This cybercrime law is very important for Timor-Leste, because with this law we can regulate online activities, the government’s priority is to pay attention to this law, so that it can be implemented in the field,” he added.
