Dili, October 22, 2024 (Média Democracia) – Anario Soares, 11 years old from Ermera, Hatulia, currently lives in Kampung Baru, he has to divide his time between school and running a business such as selling eggs on the sidewalk to help his parents meet their daily needs.
He said that his afternoon activities were about how he could help his family by dividing his time selling eggs on the side of the road.
“I go to school at Elementary school No. 5 Comoro in grade 2. I have to divide my time between selling eggs and going to school. So in the morning I have to wake up early to get ready for school. My school starts at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 12:00 noon. After returning home, I take a short nap, my mother starts boiling eggs so that I can sell them on the sidewalk of Kampung Baru market. In the afternoon I bring a rack of eggs, if many people buy, I can get 3 dollars because the price of one egg is 0.25 cents. If no one buys, I have to take it home and sell it again tomorrow. At night before going to bed I have to study,” he said.
He continued, in selling eggs no one forced him to sell them, but this was his own intention to help his parents in meeting their living needs.
“I sell eggs without anyone forcing me, including my parents. I do all this because I want to help my parents to meet the family’s needs. I give the money from selling eggs to my parents, so that it can be used to buy food and some to pay for school.” he added.
In addition, he added that living from a simple family how he can help his family meet their daily needs, must divide his time between school and selling eggs on the roadside. He is the second child of 6 siblings in his family, two of whom are now in school and four others are not.
