APC Reports on Natural Disaster Situations That Occurred Within the Last Two Weeks

Dili, 07 April 2025 (Media Democracy) – The Civil Protection Authority (APC), through the team from the Office of External Relations and Communication (GREK), reported the weekly data on natural disaster events in Timor-Leste over the past two weeks. This press conference was held in the APC hall in Caicoli, Dili.

According to the Head of the Office of External Relations and Communication (GREK), Nelson Nunes Orleans, the Civil Protection Authority recorded disaster cases affecting a total of 280 people during the week of 24–31 March, caused by climate change and various types of events.

“During the week from 24 to 31 March, the disasters that occurred in Timor-Leste were considered normal, but with different types, such as strong winds that damaged five (5) houses, landslides (6), house fires (2), and flooding that affected 46 houses. Emergency assistance was provided in 53 cases, with a total of 280 people affected. Ten (10) people were evacuated to safe places, with one person injured and one death reported.” Said the Head of the Office of External Relations and Communication (GREK), Nelson Nunes Orleans

He added that in Baucau Municipality, one house was destroyed by fire, in Bobonaro Municipality, one house was also burned, in Liquiça Municipality, strong winds damaged two houses, in Viqueque Municipality, strong winds damaged one house, and in the Special Administrative Region of Oe-Cusse Ambeno (RAEOA), strong winds damaged two houses and fires destroyed another two. A total of 46 houses were affected by flooding, two houses by fire, one person was injured, and one person lost their life. These cases occurred in different municipalities with varying types of disasters.

“During the second week, from 31 March to 07 April, the Civil Protection Authority recorded disaster cases such as strong winds damaging five (5) houses, fires destroying five (5) houses, flooding affecting nine (9) houses, landslides (5), and emergency assistance provided in eight (8) cases. A total of 105 people were affected, and 32 people were evacuated to safe places. These data refer to the incidents that occurred during the second week.” He said

He stated that the disaster cases recorded during the second week included, in Baucau Municipality, strong winds damaged one house, in Bobonaro Municipality, strong winds damaged one house, one house was destroyed by fire, and one person lost their life, in Lautem Municipality, two houses were destroyed by fire, in Liquiça Municipality, strong winds damaged one house and one house was destroyed by fire, in Viqueque Municipality, strong winds damaged one house and one house was also destroyed by fire, and in RAEOA (Special Administrative Region of Oe-Cusse Ambeno), strong winds damaged one house. Additionally, nine (9) houses were affected by flooding. These disasters occurred during the second week.

“Currently, the Civil Protection Authority teams deployed in the municipalities, together with relevant partners, are providing emergency assistance to families affected by natural disasters, including both food and non-food items.” He added
