MARTINHO TO PARTICIPATE IN PHOTO EXHIBITION IN BEIJING

Dili, September 24, 2024 (Média Democracia) – Oxfam Timor-Leste in collaboration with the Association of Timor-Leste Journalists (AJTL) held a competition for creative young people to take pictures about climate change in Timor-Leste, therefore today it presents the winning results which will be taken to a photo exhibition in Beijing.

Martinho Goncalves Araújo as the first winner expressed his gratitude to Oxfam Timor-Leste and Oxfam Hongkong who had given AJTL the trust to open the competition.

“I would like to thank Oxfam Timor-Leste and Oxfam Hong Kong who collaborated with AJTL who has a full initiative to explore the talents of young people in Timor-Leste through photography.” Martinho said.

He will go to Beijing, China to represent all Timor-Leste youth on the international stage through photography.

“I go to Beijing, China to represent the youth, especially those who competed with me to bring the name of Timor-Leste to the international stage, and the honor that I bring is 4 photos that met the criteria of AJTL and Oxfam, and other photos that still taking in next time related to climate change that occur in Timor Leste.” He said.

He advised the youth of Timor-Leste to be able to use their talents well, so that they can compete at the international level to represent existing values, especially related to climate change that is occurring in this country, so that everyone throughout the world can know the good and bad situations faced by the people of Timor-Leste.

As Chair of AJTL, Zevonia Vieira expressed her gratitude to Oxfam Timor-Leste and Oxfam Hong Kong for trusting AJTL to organize a program regarding media action on climate justice in Timor-Leste.

“AJTL was entrusted to carry out a one-year project including a photo competition to advocate for climate justice in Timor-Leste, due to the impacts of climate change.” Zevonia Vieira said.

Therefore, today AJTL and Oxfam Timor-Leste announced three winners and the first place winner will attend an exhibition in Hong Kong.

“Today AJTL and Oxfam announced three winners, the first winner will go to Beijing to participate in a photo exhibition on climate justice to represent Timor-Leste on how climate change affects vulnerable groups, women, children, adults including people with disabilities.” She said.

Competitors were surveyed to adapt to situations faced by communities such as how to find clean water at a long distance from where they live, about the production of productive sectors that have decreased due to climate change.

On this occasion, Adilson da Costa as the head of the advocacy and influencer program at Oxfam Timor-Leste said that this competition was through the Civil Society Organization Program which works to provide attention to climate change.

“The photo competition that we are organizing with AJTL is part of the Media and Civil Society Organization project that works on climate change and we believe that the involvement of media and journalists in this project will provide opportunities for young people who have creativity or talent in photography, because we want to advance the young generation.” He said.

Through a collaboration between Oxfam Timor-Leste and Oxfam Hong Kong to support Timor-Leste’s fund to create a competition for young people with talent in photography.

“Therefore, the collaboration between Oxfam Timor-Leste and Hong Kong through the financial support that currently offered to the Oxfam Timor-Leste to collaborate with AJTL for this competition, we think that the young people who have just been selected as the winners of this photo competition can represent all the young people of Timor-Leste to participate in the exhibition that will be held in Beijing.” He added.

The winners will travel to Beijing in November to present his photography and stories about the impacts of climate change and how survivors are adapting to climate change in Timor-Leste.
