Dili, November 8, 2024 (Média Democracia) – The NGO “Ba Futuru” held the sixth PeaceJam National Conference in Timor-Leste with the theme, “Innovative youth use their efforts and abilities to become agents of Peace”. The event was held at the “Ba Futuru” office, Seroja Golgota, Comoro, Dili, on Friday.
The Director of the NGO “Ba Futuru”, Judith de Sousa, said that today’s activity was part of a series of the PeaceJam National Conference attended by young people who came from various communities, especially Dili and Liquiça, to learn and share knowledge.
“We organized the PeaceJam National Conference to gather young people on how to share knowledge and skills especially about the work they have done for the community, so that through this event they can share with each other.” Said the Director of the NGO Ba Futuru, Judith de Sousa
The director continued, in addition, participants will also learn the history of how Nobel Peace Prize winners fought to build peace in their own countries and in the world.
“This training is more related to the meaning of PeaceJam in all its activities, making happy but coming from a peace strategy, so this PeaceJam is a peace curriculum which the NGO Ba Futuru has held for the sixth time, where young people learn about the history of Nobel Peace Prize winners in the world, including the Nobel Peace Prize winner in Timor-Leste, namely our current President José Ramos Horta, who each come with their own strategies in fighting for peace for the community.” He said.
He added that the younger generation will learn a lot about this history, so that it can inspire the younger generation to carry out peace actions which will then be re-implemented in the community in this country.
“We only held this PeaceJam Conference in Dili, but we also involved youth representatives because currently those participating in this activity are not only youth from Dili, but youth from Liquiça are also participating in this activity,” he said.
He further added that the PeaceJam Conference activities could be held well because they received financial support from the government in GASC with partners from AG IAMONDO through a social cohesion strengthening program initiated by Cailfante from Indonesia and Timor-Leste who contributed to young people to participate in this program.
As a representative of the family group, Cesaltino dos Santos said that this activity was very beautiful because he got new experiences from the speakers to share knowledge about the history of Nobel Peace Prize winners between our country and other countries.
“I think this activity is very important because currently we are facing many conflicts, so through this training activity we can change our mindset to minimize conflicts in this country and also learn about innovative youth in using their strengths and abilities to become agents of peace.” He said.
He emphasized that through this training, in the future, it will be further developed to conduct advocacy to communities at the district/city level, especially in rural areas, about what innovative youth do in using their strengths and abilities to become agents of peace, whose experiences and knowledge were shared by the speakers during the two days.
To be more precise, the financial support from the GASC office in this program amounted to 15,000 million. In addition, this program was fully attended by students including the community from Dili and Liquiça with a total of 120 people for two days, from Liquiça represented by 6 high schools and 4 high schools from Dili.
