“We always walk together to provide services to GBV cases that occur in Lautem, in addition, a few days ago we also held an activist campaign to stop violence against women and girls in Timor-Leste.” Said PNTL Lautem General Commander, João da Costa
He continued that in Lautem, an anti-violence activist campaign program against women and girls was also implemented from January to December 2024, in which PNTL was increasingly active in working with its partners to provide Anti-Gender Based Violence services in Lautem.
“Gender Based Violence case which National Police of Timor-Leste recorded based on data with a total of 42 with these cases all are in process to the Ministry of Public.” He added
He added that regarding this case, until now the PNTL has not found a common ground because this is a court secret, but this case is still in process at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights and the Prosecutor’s Office which will decide on this case.
“The case that occurred, we continue to strive and ask all parties to work together and collaborate in combating this case, so that it can reduce the number of Gender-Based Violence in Timor Leste, must create politics to make laws that distribute it to all people who can know because only we know the people who live in post-level and rural areas who lack knowledge, it is very difficult to combat the number of these cases.” He said.
He emphasized that in relation to this case, some people already know about it, but the majority of people still lack knowledge about Gender-Based Violence, because there has been no training for people in remote and rural areas.
To further explain that there are still many people who do not have knowledge about these cases, it is necessary to establish laws down to the grassroots level, not only at the municipal level but also down to rural areas to share training in order to collaborate in overcoming the number of gender-based violence in Timor Leste.
