SEKOMS WITH TIC-TIMOR FACILITATE TRAINING FOR MEDIA OFFICERS

Dili, September 27, 2024 ((Média Democracia) – The Secretary of State for Social Communication (SEKOMS) together with Tic-Timor facilitated the third training for media officers on the digital platform of the Information Dissemination System (SDI). The training was held at the MNEK hall, Pantai-kelapa, Dili, on Thursday.

SEKOMS, Espedito Loro Dias Ximenes, said the training for media officers is to facilitate the digital platform because currently technology has advanced so that the government will create a platform called SDI to be able to collect information generated from media officers of each Ministry.

“The IX Contitutional Government through SEKOMS provides the third training for media officers in all lines of the Ministry. The purpose of this training is to improve the knowledge of media officers, because work in the Ministry line really needs training, seeing the advancement of technology the government wants to create a special digital platform in the government called the Information Dissemination System (SDI). SEKOMS together with TIC-Timor and the Press Council collaborate to create a platform to collect information produced by media officers in the Ministry line to be conveyed to the public so that it can be accessed.” Said SEKOMS, Espedito Loro Dias Ximenes

He continued, media officer as employees of the Ministry who carry out the task of assisting the government in terms of information, really need to understand more deeply about social communication law and journalistic code of ethics so as not to hinder journalists’ activities when confirming information in the Ministry.

“We see that so far the media officer supports politics, because every government must choose its media officer, when the mandate is finished then the media officcer must change, thus there is no continuous storage of information in one ministry, the media officer is not a journalist, they are ministry employees who are tasked with assisting the government in terms of information. In addition, they must also understand the laws of social communication and the journalistic code of ethics, therefore the media officer in the ministry must respect the duties of journalists.” He said.

As the Director General of the Ministry of Cooperatives and Foreign Business (MNEK), Francisco Maukura, said that MNEK wants to work directly with SEKOMS to facilitate training for media officer in the Ministry so that they can convey information and government programs appropriately to the public, considering that in the current digitalization era we face many challenges.

“Our cooperation is how to publish and socialize government programs both domestically and abroad, as a new country in the digitalization era we always face many challenges, but we must unite to work together, from the Ministry of Cooperatives and Foreign Business we want to collaborate directly with SEKOMS to transform correct information based on the efforts that have been made by our government to support national development in Timor Leste.” Said the Director General of MNEK

He added that the Ministry of Cooperatives and Foreign Business is ready to collaborate with SEKOMS, TIC-Timor to provide training to media officer to organize the third training activity for media officer within the Ministry in order to provide a deep understanding of the Social Communications Law and the Journalistic Code of Ethics so as not to hinder journalists when accessing information related to the Ministry.
