Dili, April 11, 2025 (Média Democracia) – Living as a small business owner is not easy for anyone, but it is through personal determination and perseverance that success no matter how modest can be achieved. Often, it means enduring daily challenges to earn enough to provide for basic family needs.
Carmelita da Silva, 49, originally from Viqueque Municipality, now resides in Bebonuk, Dom Aleixo Administrative Post, Dili. She started a small business along the roadside to help support her family’s daily income.
“I started this small business in June 2022 and have continued ever since. I sell various vegetables like cassava leaves, white and black mustard, pumpkin leaves, kangkong, tomatoes, chili, green and red beans, long beans, and cucumbers. I used my own savings to start the business and did not take any group loans,” said Carmelita.
She explained that every morning, by 3:30 AM, she must go to Tasibesi Market to buy fresh vegetables brought in by sellers from Ainaro and Aileu municipalities, as the prices are more affordable and allow her to make a profit when reselling.
“This work is truly exhausting, but because of my family’s needs, I push myself to keep going. I wake up early to prepare, especially with my son, so I can reach the market on time. If I go late, I won’t get good vegetables because many others are already waiting so competition is tight,” she added.
Carmelita shared that she spends about $40 daily on vegetables, and an additional $5 for motorcycle transport to bring the produce back home and to her stall.
“Each day, I spend $45 for vegetables and transport. I believe I can earn it back through sales. I price my vegetables between $0.50 to $1.00 each. On a good day, I make around $20 to $25 in profit,” she explained.
Despite the struggles, Carmelita is committed to earning for her family’s survival and her children’s education. She said that when there is no one to help, one must help themselves and fight for a better future.
In conclusion, although the life of a street vendor is far from easy, with persistence and a strong will, anyone can move toward a brighter future even if it means starting small.
