The press conference was held at the APC Kaikoli Hall, Dili.

According to the Head of the Office of External Relations and Communication (GREK), Nelson Nunes Orleans, from April 7 to April 14, 2025, the Civil Protection Authority carried out monitoring and recorded cases of natural disasters across various municipalities, which included: two houses affected by landslides, one house destroyed by fire, one house damaged by strong winds, two cases of emergency assistance provided, a total of twenty-seven people affected, sixteen people evacuated, and three incidents prioritized.

“The municipalities impacted by natural disasters are: Covalima, where landslides damaged two houses; Lautem, where a house was destroyed by fire; Liquiça, where one house was damaged by strong winds; RAEOA, where one person was reported dead; and Viqueque, where another house was damaged by strong winds,” said Nelson Nunes Orleans, the spokesperson and Head of the Office of External Relations and Communication (GREK).

He further explained that during these incidents, the Civil Protection Authority immediately provided emergency assistance to the disaster victims and carried out evacuations for affected residents. The Authority also recorded the damaged houses in each municipality and distributed emergency aid packages to the victims. Local Civil Protection members in every municipality are always ready to provide emergency support whenever a disaster occurs.

“At this stage, Civil Protection teams in the municipalities have already collected the necessary data to ensure that victims receive emergency assistance. For those whose houses were totally destroyed, the Authority will submit the data so they can receive material support to rebuild their homes. For victims affected by fire and strong winds, the Civil Protection Authority has already distributed emergency aid packages, while others are still temporarily staying at their neighbors’ houses, but solutions will be arranged soon,” Nelson explained.

He also noted that the emergency packages provided by the Civil Protection Authority include both material and non-material assistance such as basic necessities and food supplies. The food packages are designed to cover the victims’ needs for up to three days.

Lastly, he reminded the public to stay alert, especially to protect children and avoid dangerous areas during periods of strong winds or heavy rainfall.
